The 11 hectares covered by the Resort were chosen from the sea, on a boat trip made in 1966 by George Ansliy, an Englishman who built the development inspired by the most luxurious area of Sardinia. With the help of his son-in-law, the Architect Almeida Araújo, George Ansliy began the construction of a tourism project on the site. In the beginning villages were built and sold to individuals. The buyers list included the names of Lady Goldsmith, Lord Duncan Sandys, Dom Vasco da Cunha and Eva Gabor among others. Later, in 1967, George Ansliy's granddaughter Lara is born: an event that would have a historical and decisive influence on this beautiful project. The property was renamed "VILALARA" in honour of the newborn girl. More or less around this time, in 1968, Mr. Leon Levy visits the property and falls madly in love with the setting. Two years later he acquires VILALARA, transforming it into a "Private Club". VILALARA continued to grow over the years, becoming a hidden paradise of rare beauty and discretion in an idyllic setting, able to satisfy the most demanding clientele seeking privacy and exclusivity. By the hand of Mr. Léon Levy and of the Architect Ramiro Laranjo, VILALARA continues to evolve, always true to its origins and gradually becoming the hotel it is today. In 1990 the first Portuguese Thalassotherapy centre is built at VILALARA. The concept for this Centre for cures and therapies based on seawater is attributed to Jean Bobet, from Biarritz - one of the biggest global Thalassotherapy celebrities, the Vilalara architect, Ramiro Laranjo, and Samuel Paillat, an interior decorator from Geneva. With an area of 2,600 m2 the Thalassotherapy Centre is always kept up to date and constantly renovated, offering the latest and most sophisticated equipment available on the market. In September 2007, the Amorim Turismo Group acquires the entire resort, now called VILALARA THALASSA RESORT, the holding's second hotel to be developed by Blue & Green Hotels. On June 20, 2009, after eight months of renovation work, the first five-star resort in the Algarve, the Blue & Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort, reopened with a new image, adapted to market requirements and capable of meeting the expectations of its customers.

At the top of the cliff, overlooking the ocean, dreams are of discovery and freedom. In the Thalassotherapy Centre, therapists put the properties of seawater in the service of your health. Your body is in perfect osmosis with the elements of nature. With a dream atmosphere, cozy facilities and attentive service, the Sofitel Thalassa Vilalara, wrapped in water and nature, helps you discover the body and awaken the all the senses.
