There are several airports in the world that manage to capture the attention of global flyers with their imposing size. Some of the largest airfields in the globe are known to possess more than 15 miles of aviation related commercial properties surrounding them. Hence it is considered to be an understatement to address these gigantic structures as mere airports.

According to reports the tag for the world's most expensive airport belongs to the Hong Kong international airport which is located in the Chek Lap Kok Island in the district of Hong Kong. Reportedly the Hong Kong International airport has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records by virtue of the astronomical cost of $20 billion that was incurred during its construction. This gigantic airport has been built on a vast artificial island that was formed by levelling a couple of islands. However construction of this airport proved to be a long drawn out process and it took over six years to build the giant infrastructural landmark.

It is also goes by the name of “Chek Lap Kok “airport in order to distinguish itself from the “Kai Tak Airport”, which was formerly the main airport of the Asian metropolis and has closed all operations several years back.

Ever since the “Chek Lap Kok “airport commenced commercial operations in 1998, it has rapidly climbed the global charts and is now considered to be one of the busiest cargo handling terminals in the world. Chek Lap Kok is also one of the busiest passenger airports in the world and handles millions of passengers every year. Several passengers fly in and out of the aerodrome every day. Reports indicate that over 90 global airlines of the likes of Hong Kong Express, Cathay Pacific fly to 150 worldwide destinations from “Chek Lap Kok “airport. The colossal airport also serves as an important contributor to the Hong Kong economy and reportedly employs over 60,000 employees. This airport has a total of 66 boarding gates with as many bridge gates and seven virtual gates. Currently the Terminal 1 of the airport is ranked as the third largest airport terminal building in the globe and manages to surpass the Dubai and Beijing airport terminals.
